CT600: Prepare the Company Tax Return Properly
A Company Tax Return brings together a company’s tax calculation, accounts and supporting information. The CT600 is part of that package. Preparation begins with complete records and a clear accounting period, rather than with typing figures into the return itself.
Reconcile the accounting records
Check bank balances, sales, expenses, assets and director transactions before calculating taxable profit. Accounting profit and taxable profit can differ. Preserve the explanation for adjustments so a reviewer can trace each material figure from the accounts to the tax computation without relying on memory. Before deciding, write a short fact sheet covering the owners, the activity, the places involved and the intended outcome. Separate confirmed facts from assumptions that still need checking. Give the reviewer the actual documents rather than a summary assembled from memory. This makes the advice easier to apply and reduces the chance that a crucial detail is overlooked.
Confirm the period and filing route
The accounts period and Corporation Tax accounting periods require attention, especially for a company’s first accounts. Check the current HMRC filing requirements and suitable software. Do not assume a Companies House submission also sends the Company Tax Return or settles the payment obligation. Create a working folder with the source records, the questions raised and the answer received. Check that names, addresses and periods agree across documents before anything is submitted. If the instructions are unclear, resolve that point with the relevant authority or a suitable adviser. A documented decision is easier to revisit when the business changes than an informal assumption.
Review and retain the submitted package
Have the responsible director review the return, computation and accounts together. Confirm payment arrangements separately and retain the accepted submission evidence. Record any losses, claims or balances that affect a later period so the next preparer starts from a documented position. Assign a named person to the next action and record how completion will be evidenced. Keep accepted filings, correspondence and supporting calculations together. Revisit the arrangement when ownership, location or activity changes. Where more than one country or authority is involved, ask who will coordinate the work so each adviser understands the wider picture before relying on another person’s conclusions.
Check the official guidance
Rules and provider requirements can change. Check the current official guidance and seek advice on your circumstances before acting.
Are accounting profit and taxable profit always the same?
No. The tax computation may require adjustments to accounting profit.
Does filing accounts submit the Company Tax Return too?
No. Treat Companies House accounts, the Company Tax Return and payment as distinct tasks.
